A Bank of Italy survey on the cost of current accounts for individuals shows an increase in 2018, specifically a rise of 7.50 euros compared to the previous year.

In fact, in 2018 the expense for the management of a current account amounted to 86.90 euros. It is a clear acceleration with respect to the previous two years, in which it had increased by 2.90 euros.

Changes of similar magnitude occurred in 2015 (5.80 euros) and 2013 (6.90 euros). Also, in the case of postal current accounts, maintenance costs increased significantly (4.90 euros in 2018, 2.10 euros in 2017). With regards to online banking accounts, they remained without substantial changes and amounted to 15.50 euros.

Expenses increased mainly as a result of the increase in basic commissions and debit cards. The combined increase in the number of transactions and the corresponding charges for automatic payments, booking fees and online transfers (the latter however remained at significantly lower levels than bank transfers) also contributed significantly.
