Rome's historic monuments to reopen

Good news for those who want to visit some of the most important monuments of ancient Rome. From 1st September 2021, Rome's tourist attractions will reopen to the public. Take note that ticket reservations are mandatory and COVID-19 restrictions will be in place. The reopening of monuments in ancient Rome is promoted by Roma Culture, Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage. We have the details.  

After the Italian coronavirus lockdown which began on 8th March 2020, Rome's monuments were closed along with the rest of the country. Due to the health emergency, many of the monuments in ancient Rome have remained closed to the public, but this is about to change. The following Roman monuments will reopen to the public with restricted entry on 1st September 2021:

  • Aqua Virgo
  • Auditorium of Maecenas
  • Archaeological Area of the Tomb of the Scipios
  • Sacred Area of Sant'Omobono
  • Fontanone di Sant'Omobono, Rome's most famous fountain 
  • Fontanone dell'Acqua Paola, also known as Il Fontanone
  • Insula dell'Ara Coeli
  • Ludus Magnus, also known as the Great Gladiatorial Training School
  • Monte del Grano Mausoleum
  • Sacrario Garibaldino Mausoleum
  • Great Altar of Unconquered Hercules
  • Monte Testaccio
  • Sepolcreto Ostiense
  • Porta Asinaria
  • Sepolcri Repubblicani di via Statilia
  • Trophies of Mario
  • The walkways of the Aurelian Walls in the sections of Via Campania and Viale Pretoriano.

Booking tickets to visit Ancient Rome: tickets must be booked in advance and cost either 4 euros (full price) or 3 euros (reduced price). Reservations can be made by calling the help centre on 060608, and for visitors that are not visiting as part of an organised tour, visits will have to made according to a predefined schedule for each monument.
