Balconies have become one of the symbols of this period of confinement due to the coronavirus outbreak. For many, these small spaces are the only way to contact the outside world and also a space where residents can socialise or show solidarity with those who are fighting on the front line against the health emergency. The home improvement experts at Habitissimo have put together some tips for the best way to furnish a balcony during quarantine to make the most out of this small space.

Folding furniture for small spaces

Not everyone has the luxury of having a terrace or balcony. On the other hand, there are many people who do have a balcony, but it's so small that it is not possible to even have a table or chairs. However, if this period of quarantine has taught us anything, it is that balconies can always be used, no matter how small they may be and there are options for all sizes. Round tables generally take up less space than square tables, and folding chairs and stools offer practical space-saving solutions. Another option is even to invest in some folding tables that hang when not in use to create a lovely space to eat outside.

Outdoor workspace

Many of us have had to resort to smart working by adapting last minute workspaces at home. Some have even chosen the option of using the balcony as their workplace. You obviously don't need to take your whole computer system outside, although on sunny days, working with your laptop outside is a great option. However, as working outside is a more inconvenient option, a great idea is to position your desk as close as possible to the exterior, beside the balcony door for example, leaving room to go out on the balcony for ease of access. Natural light will be an inspiration and you'll always be able to observe whatever is going on outside the window, something which can be a good relaxation technique when working.

Textiles outside

How cosy are balconies full of fabric? It seems impractical to put a mat outside, especially if the weather is rainy, yet it is a touch that will give a balcony a lot of warmth. Simply choose waterproof materials that are easy to clean in the case of rain, such as vinyl. In addition to mats, another option for a cosy balcony can be having some blankets to hand so that you can stay outside even when the weather is not so hot, while sipping some warming tea or coffee.

Plants, plants and more plants

Many of us already have plants on the balcony, but in these days of confinement we appreciate those green touches more than ever. Plants not only keep us company and make the air cleaner, but they are also said to be good for wellbeing. It is better to choose outdoor plants that suit the orientation of your balcony, as not all plants can withstand direct sunlight for example, and many others, on the other hand, require a higher level of light.
