Grotta della Poesia
Grotta della Poesia is in Roca Vecchia, a hamlet of Melendugno in the province of Lecce. This natural pool, carved out by the sea, is one of the best-known sights in Salento. The name is linked to a legend about a princess who bathed in the cave and inspired poets with her beauty.
There are actually two caves here: the larger Poesia Grande and the smaller one. The first is easy to reach via steps cut into the rock, while the second is much less accessible and wilder in feel. The large cave on the southern side opens onto the sea and is connected to the smaller cave by an underwater tunnel.
Those feeling brave can also try a dive into these ever-changing shades of water from a height of around four metres. It is an experience that can quite literally take your breath away.

Baia di Sorgento
On the island of Ischia, in the comune (municipality) of Forio, lies a kind of free thermal park: Baia di Sorgento. Here, a restorative soak is possible thanks to thermal water that emerges at very high temperatures and mixes with the cooler currents of the sea.
Getting to this sunny corner is not difficult, though it does take some effort, as around 200 steps lead down to the water. During summer, a water-taxi service also runs from nearby Sant’Angelo.
A thermal swim here has its own particular appeal, and the bay is also a pleasant place to watch the sunset.

Laghetti di Avola
Inside the Cavagrande del Cassibile Oriented Nature Reserve, in the province of Siracusa, are the Laghetti di Avola: small pools carved into white stone and framed by wild, lush vegetation.
Fans of hiking and day walks will appreciate the roughly 17 km trail leading to the pools. It is a lovely walk through largely untouched countryside, among oriental plane trees and oleanders. Afterwards, there is the chance for a refreshing swim in the clear pools and a quiet moment listening to the waterfalls.
The route has quite a steep gradient, which can be demanding for those who are not used to walking. It also helps keep the area relatively quiet, even during high season.

Piscina di Venere
At the far northern tip of Milazzo lies one of Sicily’s most striking places: the Piscina di Venere, or Venus Pool. This natural pool is sheltered by the Capo Milazzo promontory and fills at high tide.
It is reached along a path through typical Mediterranean scrub, with wide sea views along the way. The scent of local plants and the changing colours of the coast accompany the walk down to a staircase set into the rock, leading to the pool.
The effort is rewarded with an impressive view and a chance to cool off in its clear water.

Piscina Irgas
In the heart of Sardinia is the Oridda Valley, home to a real local treasure: Piscina Irgas. It is a pool of water beneath waterfalls and surrounded by the high rock walls of the canyon where it sits.
Reaching it involves a walk along a particularly scenic path, where the scent of eucalyptus and aromatic plants growing in abundance helps take the edge off the effort.
After the walk, there is a chance to swim in this natural pool. Anyone with energy left can continue towards another natural sight: Muru Mannu Waterfall and the waterfalls of the Rio Linas.
