Building your own home with your own hands is becoming increasingly common. Many companies have chosen to simplify construction processes and offer easy-to-assemble houses, similar to Lego structures. ZeroCabin is one such example.
ZeroCabin, a company based in Chile, provides kits for sustainable, zero-impact cabins that can be adapted to any location. Made from wood and metal, these homes harness solar energy and rainwater to be 100% self-sufficient, without the need to connect to the power grid, making them a sustainable choice.
To achieve this, the cabins are powered by photovoltaic solar panels and feature a Becker wood-burning stove for heating, as well as rainwater collection and greywater recycling systems. They also incorporate Rootman ecological insulation. The company produces a fully natural, biodegradable thermal insulation made from oak roots, using a process that requires minimal fossil fuels.
For the construction of the cabins, the company itself provides guidance on purchasing land and adapting the kit to the plot. The houses are also built with minimal impact on the environment, as builders can transport the materials on foot or using off-road vehicles.
ZeroCabin DIY kits are available for purchase and worldwide shipping, with each one customised according to the geographical location and the client’s preferences. According to the company’s website, the cabins are designed with consideration for topography, rainfall, and solar parameters. As for pricing, it varies depending on the size and materials chosen. Once the project is initiated, the kit will be produced in approximately two months.
To date, three ZeroCabin units have been built in Chile: one in a puma reserve in Puerto Varas, another on an island near Chiloé, and the last in the city of Panguipulli. All of them fulfil the company’s promises, as they have been constructed sustainably, with materials transported on foot and using off-road vehicles—demonstrating just how easy and convenient they are to assemble.
If you're a DIY enthusiast, the ZeroCabin project is definitely for you. If you've always dreamed of building your own home and want it to be eco-friendly and self-sufficient, this could be the perfect solution.
