1 euro houses in Bonnanaro: details about the scheme

The local council in Bonnanaro has just approved a resolution to allow the purchase of 1 euro houses in the village to encourage the redevelopment of the historic centre and attract new citizens to repopulate the village. Moreover, the purposes for which the houses will be used include commercial and tourist accommodation, as well as residential.

The 1 euro home initiative in Italy is not only an opportunity for buyers, but also aims to help the owners of properties in the historic centre of the village that have fallen into disuse and are in the grip of decay, on which they also bear the burden and duties of redevelopment or safety (and therefore considerable costs).

The municipality is activating a procedure, valid for 3 years, to verify and acquire the willingness of the owners to sell the properties at a symbolic price to private individuals, agencies, companies or associations willing to invest in the renovation and enhancement of the historic centre.

For those who wish to either sell their property or buy a 1 euro house in this Italian village, documents are available on the website of the local council. Those who buy must start renovation work within two months of the building permit being issued.

Bonnanaro lies in the valley between Mount Pelao and Mount Arana. The village has a predominantly agricultural economy and owes its fame to the cultivation of vines and cherries. The historical centre preserves intact some 18th and 19th century manor houses, including the churches of Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Santa Croce and the neoclassical church of San Giorgio.

The village extends into the valley between Mount Arana and Mount Pélao. The territory, which has gained prominence in the scientific field thanks to the presence of numerous archaeological sites linked to the pre-Nuragic 'culture of Bonnanaro', is characterised by a hilly terrain rich in aquifers and watercourses that have encouraged the cultivation of cherry trees and vines.
