In 2019, the production of wine sold in the European Union (including sparkling wine, port and grape must) reached almost 16 billion litres. This is according to new data released by Eurostat, which states that the main wine producers in the EU in 2019 were Italy, Spain and France, followed by Portugal, Germany and Hungary.

Italy produced over 5,5 billion litres of wine in 2019 (an amount which is around 35% of the total EU wine production), while Spain produced 4,3 billion litres and France 3,4 billion litres. And as well as being the biggest producer of wine in the EU, Italy is also the biggest exporter.

In 2019, EU Member States exported 7.1 billion litres of wine. Almost half of this wine was exported to countries outside the EU (3.1 billion litres, or 43% of total wine exports), mainly to the UK and the US.

When it comes to exports, Italy takes the crown by a significant margin, with non-EU exports of 1.1 billion litres in 2019, representing 34% of EU Member States' non-EU wine exports. When it comes to wine exports, Italy is once again followed by France (0.8 billion litres, 25%) and Spain (0.7 billion litres, 22%).
