Vernazza is one of the five villages that make up the Cinque Terre, perched along the Ligurian coast. A small harbour framed by tall pastel houses and terraced vineyards climbing the hills behind, it remains one of the most photographed corners of Italy.

What to see in Vernazza

Officially recognised as one of Italy's most beautiful towns, Vernazza is compact, so everything is within walking distance. The joy here is in short climbs, sea views and the way the village suddenly opens up onto the water.

Vernazza harbour and Piazza Marconi

The small natural harbour is the heart of the village, edged by tall, narrow houses painted in soft pinks and yellows. Piazza Marconi sits just behind it, where you’ll find cafés spilling onto the square and locals taking an evening stroll.

Church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia

Built in the 14th century, this stone church stands right by the sea with its octagonal bell tower rising above the harbour. Inside, it’s simple and atmospheric, a quiet contrast to the busy waterfront outside.

Doria Castle and Belforte Tower

The remains of this medieval defensive structure sit above the village and require a short uphill walk. The tower viewpoint gives a clear sweep of the coastline and vineyards, and it’s one of the best perspectives over Vernazza.

Hiking the Sentiero Azzurro

The famous Blue Trail links Vernazza with Monterosso and Corniglia, cutting across terraces and cliffs. Sections sometimes close for maintenance, so it’s worth checking local park updates before planning a long hike.

Events and festivities in Vernazza

Summer is when Vernazza feels most animated, particularly around the Feast of Santa Margherita in July. The village celebrates its patron saint with religious processions, music and fireworks over the sea, along with friendly rivalry between the historic districts, known as lùvegu and sciùiu.

Seasonal concerts and cultural events are organised as part of the Cinque Terre National Park programme, though dates vary each year.

What to eat in Vernazza: local food and wine

Food in Vernazza is rooted in Ligurian tradition, and it leans heavily on what the sea and steep terraces provide.

  • Anchovies from Monterosso, often served fried or layered in the local tian Vernazza with tomatoes and potatoes.
  • Pesto alla genovese, made with Ligurian basil, pine nuts, Parmigiano Reggiano and pecorino.
  • Cinque Terre DOC white wines, mineral and crisp, grown on narrow hillside plots.
  • Sciacchetrà, a rare sweet passito wine made from partially dried grapes, produced in small quantities across the Cinque Terre.

Living in Vernazza

Vernazza has a very small year-round population, and daily life shifts dramatically between winter and peak season. Building and renovation are tightly regulated due to its UNESCO status and location within the national park, so housing stock is limited.

As of February 2026, property prices in La Spezia province average €2,240 per m², and in the municipality of La Spezia, they stood at €2,076 per m². For context, that would put an 80 m² apartment at around €166,080, depending on location and condition.

By comparison, homes within the Cinque Terre villages, such as Vernazza, tend to command a significant premium due to scarcity and strict building regulations.

On the rental side, average rent prices in La Spezia province are currently around €11.4 per m², meaning an 80 m² flat would cost roughly €912 per month. Availability inside Vernazza itself remains limited, with most properties geared towards short-term holiday lets rather than long-term residential contracts.
