Holiday season is here and as many plan to jet off to Italy this summer, it's important to keep an eye on the latest Italy travel restrictions, including Italy's COVID entry requirements from the UK, the USA, Ireland and other EU and non-EU countries. Do you have to wear a mask in Italy? Is Italy's green pass still necessary? We have all the latest details of the most recent Italy COVID entry requirements and rules for Summer 2022.

Italy travel restrictions update

As of 1st June 2022, COVID-19 restrictions on entering Italy have been completely removed. This means that to enter Italy by plane, car or boat, travellers are not required to show proof of vaccination, a negative test result, nor a COVID-19 recovery certificate to enter the country. This regardless of whether you have been vaccinated or not.

The only entry requirement that remains for all travellers arriving in Italy by plane, train, bus or boat is wearing a mask. All passengers must wear an FFP2 mask in order to enter Italy.

These rules apply to all international travellers arriving in Italy, regardless of their origin, including both EU and non-EU passengers.

Travel to Italy from the UK

Italy entry requirements from the UK, like those for all international travellers, have been removed and UK citizens are not required to show any COVID related documents upon arrival in Italy. The only entry requirement for UK tourists is wearing an FFP2 face mask, as previously mentioned.

When returning to the UK, the situation is similar, as all COVID travel rules in the UK have also been lifted. There is therefore no need to test, quarantine or fill in a passenger locator form at any stage of the trip.

Passenger locator form Italy

Passengers travelling to Italy by plane no longer need to complete a passenger locator form before departure, as the law with this requirement was removed on 1st May 2022.

Italy COVID restrictions

On 15th June 2022, Italy removed its remaining mask rules with the obligation to wear a mask indoors no longer applying in cinemas, theatres, sporting events, restaurants and bars, hairdressing salons and beauty salons. There are however some exceptions and the wearing of masks in certain areas is likely to be extended until 30th September. Therefore, in Italy you only have to wear a mask:

  • on any type of public transport, including trains, buses, planes, taxis, boats etc.
  • in all healthcare centres, services and establishments, including going to the doctor and the hospital.

As of today, Italy doesn't have any other COVID restrictions in place, as other restrictions such as curfews have also been lifted. Travellers are simply urged to follow general health and safety measures, including washing your hands often, using hydroalcoholic gel, keeping a safe distance and wearing a mask if you're not able to maintain social distancing.
