The "Coliving - collaborate, share, live" project, known in Italian as "Coliving - collaborare, condividere, abitare", is a living initiative promoted by Trentino Alto Adige to repopulate mountain villages and build new communities.
The project was born in 2019 from an idea of the autonomous province of Trento. Through the publication of annual calls for applications, Trentino offers an incredible opportunity to young couples and families: to move to places rich in history and with breathtaking views, taking advantage of completely free houses. It is a project aimed at the repopulation of mountain villages and the creation of new social and community networks immersed in nature.

Coliving, rent-free for 4 years
By participating in dedicated calls for proposals, the Coliving project offers young families and couples the opportunity to move to mountain areas, away from the chaos of big cities, free of charge, with no obligation to pay rent for 4 years.
It may sound strange, but it is true. The measure was implemented to enhance the wonderful and often neglected realities of Trentino. The project has already been tested in Luserna and Canal San Bovo, where some families have had the opportunity to move with their children and radically change their lives, immersed in nature.
Exempting families from rent is undoubtedly the distinctive feature of the whole project. The opportunity to rediscover the "old" forms of community has awakened a deeper need to live more simply, surrounded by traditions and more direct human relationships.
Young couples and new parents who participated in the project argue that it was not an easy choice. However, the absence of the obligation to pay a monthly rent was an incentive: many of these families, in fact, already accustomed to teleworking for some time, took the opportunity to educate their children in a different way, as well as to rediscover the beauty of nature and to be part of small communities of people.
Rediscover life's simple pleasures in Trentino
Abandoning the frenetic life of large towns and cities to move to the mountains is not something for everyone. And in many cases, it's something that depends on one's personality and lifestyle: there are those who prefer to wake up in the middle of a bustling street full of shops, and those, on the other hand, who love the idea of immersing themselves in silence and admiring the lushness of a green forest simply by opening the door of their home. What is certain is that the flats and facilities made available for the Coliving project are located in places that allow one to rediscover life's simple pleasures.
Living in the mountains means having the opportunity to experience local produce, such as food, first hand, socialising with every member of the community and breathing clean air every day. These peripheral areas of northern Italy have given many families the pleasure of living immersed in an invaluable historical and cultural heritage, in the tranquillity of landscapes surrounded by nature.
A sustainable opportunity
The Coliving project has given some Italian families the opportunity to live a real dream. The possibility of enjoying the proximity of places of historical and cultural interest, consuming zero-kilometre food and venturing on long walks in nature has allowed them to rediscover an almost forgotten well-being, respecting the canons of a life led in the name of environmental sustainability.
Thanks to the collective living project developed by the Trentino Alto Adige institutions, in fact, the families involved were able to rediscover the advantages of reaching schools and shops on foot or by bicycle. The initiative is noble and has a twofold objective: to repopulate peripheral mountain villages and reduce the environmental impact, promoting a new, more sustainable and authentic way of living.
