Rome’s new Pietralata stadium gets green light

Nuovo stadio della Roma Pietralata
Roma Capitale

AS Roma’s new stadium in Pietralata has cleared a major hurdle, receiving approval from the Giunta of Roma Capitale. The decision moves the project closer to reality, with a final vote by the Capitoline Assembly expected in the coming weeks.

The stadium, planned to hold around 60,000 spectators, forms part of a €1.05 billion investment by AS Roma, including €696 million for construction and the rest for urbanisation works. The project also incorporates mandatory conditions set by the Assembly, including funding for additional parking and integration with the city’s Urban Parking Plan.

Once the Assembly gives final approval, the project will enter the regional single-authorisation process, including an environmental impact assessment.

A new urban hub

The Technical and Economic Feasibility Project covers 27 hectares, of which 15 are dedicated to public green space and squares. The stadium will feature one of Europe’s largest stands, with 23,000 seats, and host a 1,600 m² museum, a 1,800 m² fan store, 30 retail outlets, a park bar, and 21,000 m² for hospitality and conference facilities.

Two large green areas, the Stadium Park and Central Park, will offer public spaces for recreation, outdoor sports, cycling, and walking. The scheme also includes pedestrianising parts of Via Sublata, creating new squares, play areas, fitness zones, and refreshment facilities.

Parking and mobility improvements are significant: 91,426 m² of public and private parking, three bike stations, 3,582 bike spaces, and links to Metro Line B, FL2, and Tiburtina station will ensure accessibility and safety.

Leadership comments

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri described the project as “not just a sports facility, but a symbol of regeneration, forward-thinking, and confidence in Rome’s ability to deliver high-quality urban projects.”

Urban Planning Councillor Maurizio Veloccia added that the stadium will “create a new urban hub that enriches the city and contributes to the regeneration of Pietralata.”

He praised the administration for moving quickly from dossier submission to approval, ensuring the project is ready for the final stages of the Service Conference authorisation.
