At the heart of the project was Don Bepo Vavassori, a local priest. From the 1950s onwards, he pushed to create housing and a dignified environment for families in difficulty, orphans and people rebuilding their lives after the war. Around the new parish of San Giuseppe, the neighbourhood gradually filled out with public housing, basic services and a tight‑knit community.
Later, the opening of the Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital and the creation of Trucca Park changed the feel of the area again. Villaggio degli Sposi found itself next to one of Bergamo’s main employers and one of its biggest green spaces. This boosted demand for housing and brought steady improvements in roads, public transport and local facilities.
