How can you get English-language television in Italy? / Gtres

Maybe you’ve just moved to Italy and are missing your country, or maybe you’ve been living here a while now but want to catch up on the news and your favourite TV programmes from home. Well, why don’t you watch the English-language TV channels in your Italian home on your Italian telly? Find out all the different ways of doing it:

Satellite television

Satellite TV is probably the most well-known and stable option on the market, but also the priciest. You’ll need to have a satellite dish, satellite receiver and a card. Bear in mind, too, that installing a satellite dish is no easy task, and you’ll have to get a professional to do it for you. This may mean drilling holes through walls and getting permission from the owner of your apartment block, which isn’t always easy. So what other options are there?

Websites

You can go to the official websites of such TV channels as the BBC, Sky, ITV and CNN, where you can sometimes watch live and recorded content, but these sites may be blocked when viewed from a different country.

Another option is to use one of the many third-party websites that also broadcast their shows. This is often the quickest way, but a lot of the time it can be quite annoying because there’s so many adverts. You also have to be very careful because the advertisements on these pages can be misleading and try to make you think that you need a plugin, player or codec when you don’t.

Apps

There are a number of different apps you can use to watch television content on a phone or tablet with all the benefits of having added comfort and mobility. Even better, you may be able to connect your device to the television and watch your favourite shows on the big screen (depending on the device and the television you’ve got). One downside, however, is that they might ask you for excessive permissions that border on being abusive, so be very careful.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

What is a VPN? Without getting too technical, a VPN lets you connect your computer to a different server remotely. For instance, if you are sitting in your house in Italy, you can use a VPN to fool your internet connection into thinking you are in a different country, be it the UK, Ireland, USA or anywhere in the world. This way it seems as though you’re connecting from home because of the IP address of your computer.

To use a VPN, you’ll have to contract the service with a VPN provider located in that country. This is one of the most reliable solutions currently on the market, and is 100% legal, but you should be aware that this is usually a paid service, and not free.

Paid websites

There are several streaming platforms for which you have to pay a monthly fee to watch TV channels from your country. The best thing about them is that they have better picture resolution and velocity without all the complicated cables and antennas to be installed.

Other options for watching your favourite TV channels involve technical solutions that aren’t suitable for the tech novice, such as PROXY (similar to VPN, but not as good because it’s fairly slow) and SLINGBOX (a device that has to be connected to the network of the specific house in your home country).

It’s clear, then, that even if you live in Italy, there are plenty of way to keep enjoying all your favourite television programmes from home – all you have to do is choose which option is right for you.
