Beyond the great European capitals, post-pandemic tourism seems to be setting a new trend, which CNN experts have already picked up on. They have reviewed the most beautiful villages in Europe. Let's take a look at the two Italian villages found in this list.
Anghiari
Perched on a hill near the Tuscan-Umbrian border, Anghiari is a delight: a small walled town that curls in on itself, seeming almost to cling to the surrounding landscape.
It is a pedestrian labyrinth of alleyways and 'rollercoaster' streets, full of grand palaces built by the mysterious and mercenary 'men of arms' who lived here in the Renaissance period.
Find out more about this at the Museum of the Battle of Anghiari, which tells the story of an important medieval battle that took place on the plains outside the town.
Mazara del Vallo
Sicily is a marvel, and Mazara del Vallo is no exception. Founded by the Phoenicians almost 3,000 years ago, it has witnessed a myriad of cultures pass through the island: its Kasbah area is similar to a North African medina, there is a strong Tunisian community and you'll probably find couscous on the pasta menu.
Its main attraction is the Dancing Satyr, an ancient bronze statue fished out of the sea in 1998.
