About the village of Chiaromonte

Chiaromonte is a small village located in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. It is situated in the province of Potenza, about 80 kilometers southwest of the regional capital, also called Potenza. The village is perched on a hilltop, providing panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The village is also known for its religious sites. The Church of San Nicola, dating back to the 12th century, features a beautiful Romanesque facade and houses precious artworks. Another notable religious building is the Church of San Rocco, which showcases a mix of architectural styles.

Towards the east is "Timpa Angari", on the slopes of which you can find the former local archaeological site (the discovery of a tomb of an Italic warrior from the 6th century B.C.). The historical centre is gathered on the rocky spur in the form of an amphitheatre, while the modern centre has expanded rapidly on the slopes of the hill.

The municipal territory is divided into several parts. A characteristic feature of the town is the presence of numerous caves dug into the rock, in which the reserves of red wine produced by the local vineyards, one of the fundamental elements of Chiaromonte's gastronomy, are kept. Like many other villages in the Basilicata region, Chiaromonte is known for its traditional cuisine. Local specialities include dishes such as "pezzata," a traditional meat stew, and "lagane e ceci," a pasta dish with chickpeas.

While Chiaromonte is a small village, it offers a peaceful and picturesque retreat for visitors seeking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Basilicata countryside and explore the region's rich history and culture. This makes it one of the best places to buy a 1 euro house in Italy in 2023.
