There are approximately 1.57 billion self-employed workers worldwide, corresponding to 46.6 per cent of the global workforce. Those who make a living as freelancers have to consider many factors when choosing the best city to move to, from the average salary to the number of available jobs. Compare the Market AU conducted a study to discover the best cities to work as a freelancer by analysing seven parameters, including the number of coworking spaces, Wi-Fi hotspots, income tax rate, electricity costs, average salary, internet speed and freelance jobs. Milan has been included in the ranking of the best European cities to work as a freelancer. Let's have a look at the full list.
London
London unsurprisingly occupies the top spot, being home to some of the world's biggest brands, such as Rolls Royce and Cadbury - it has the highest number of coworking spaces (1,311), the second highest number of Wi-Fi hotspots (766,396) and the third highest number of freelance jobs advertised in the city (1,863).

Paris is ranked second with the highest number of freelance workplaces (2,442), the second highest number of co-working spaces (245) and Wi-Fi hotspots (428,806).
Warsaw
Warsaw, Poland, is in third place in the ranking, with the lowest average price for 1 kW/h of electricity in Europe, with an average cost of 0.067 euros per kW/h and the second highest number of freelance jobs, with 2,044 jobs (more than London).
Milan
Milan, Italy, ranks fourth in the ranking and is the city with the highest average Internet speed in Europe, with an average speed of 204.14 Mb/s, 1,107 freelance jobs and an average salary of 1,749 euros.
Zurich
Zurich, Switzerland, is the city with the highest average salary for freelancers in Europe, with an average monthly income of 6,533 euros.
Italian cities
In addition to Milan, the top 35 European cities for freelancers also include Rome, Turin and Naples, at positions 17, 19 and 24 respectively. A ratio of income to taxes equal to that of Milan, slightly lower average salaries, except in the case of Naples, which differs from Milan by 500 euros, and a rather high number of wifi hotspots all contribute to the scores.
