Italy has quietly picked up a new global title. A 2025 international study has ranked one Italian city as the best in the world for night travel, reflecting a wider shift towards cooler evenings and crowd-free sightseeing.

How the Noctourism ranking was calculated

The capital city of Italy achieved an overall score of 6.07 out of 10, placing it first worldwide. The strongest category by far was Experiences, where Rome scored 9.2, the highest of all cities analysed. Amsterdam and Tromsø followed in joint second place with scores of 6.03.

Rome’s strength lies in the depth of what it does after dark. The city lists 305 night tours, with an average price of €51, giving it the highest Experiences score in the index.

Rather than revolving around nightlife in the usual sense, Rome’s evenings lean heavily into history and atmosphere — a strength also reflected in its 2026 Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award.

That translates into twilight access to the Colosseum, evening openings at the Vatican Museums, and guided walks through the historic centre under softer lighting. In summer, open-air cinema screenings pop up across the city, and food tours drift through Trastevere once daytime crowds have eased.

Is Rome easy to explore at night?

On transport, Rome scored 5.8. The metro and night buses cover central areas, with last services running until around 11.30 pm, and a one-way ticket costing about €1.50.

Its Safety Index score was 5.2. While not among the very highest globally, central districts such as the historic centre, Trastevere and Piazza Navona remain active and well-lit into the evening.

Best things to do in Rome after dark

Rome doesn’t shut down when the sun dips behind the dome of St Peter’s. It shifts gears.

  • Descend into the Catacombs of San Callisto at closing time
Evening visits to the catacombs along the recent UNESCO addition of Via Appia Antica feel far removed from the chaos of the city above.

A guided tour of the early Christian burial tunnels by low light gives a completely different insight into Rome’s layered past.

  • Trevi Fountain after 10 pm
The Trevi Fountain is just as striking at night as it is during the day. It’s rarely empty, though, and early risers start appearing from around 5 am for photos.

The new entry fee applies during prime-time daylight hours, while viewing it from the piazza above remains free, as does getting close after hours.

  • Opera under the stars at the Baths of Caracalla
During the summer programme, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma stages full productions in the ruins of the Baths of Caracalla.

Watching Verdi or Puccini against 3rd-century Roman walls is one of those experiences that feels improbably cinematic rather than touristy.

  • Lungo il Tevere festival along the river
Between June and August, stretches of the Tiber transform into a temporary nighttime village.

The festival is relaxed, local, and far less polished than central piazza dining.

  • Climb the Gianicolo Hill for a late panorama
The Gianicolo terrace offers one of the best views over the city. Go after 9 pm, and you’ll see the domes and monuments glowing.
  • Night kayaking on the Tiber
A handful of organised evening kayaking tours paddle through central Rome after sunset.

Drifting beneath Ponte Sant’Angelo with Castel Sant’Angelo illuminated ahead feels surprisingly calm for a capital city.

Why Noctourism is growing in 2026

Radical Storage also cites a Booking.com survey showing that 62% of travellers across 33 countries are considering trips that include night-time activities such as stargazing and after-dark tours.

Hotter summers and heavier daytime crowds are nudging travellers towards evening exploration. Rome fits neatly into that pattern. The monuments take on a different presence after sunset, and the city’s pace slows without ever going quiet.
