Another village in the Italian region of Sicily has joined the long list of villages with 1 euro houses for sale. Salemi, in the province of Trapani, is stepping up its 1 euro house game. However, this is not a new initiative for the Sicilian town, which actually launched the project years ago and has recently launched a new call for applications which can be submitted until 31st August.

On Salemi's website you can find a section dedicated to the 'Case a 1 euro 2021' project. "The 'Case a 1 euro' initiative was launched by the Salemi municipal administration, which for years has been pursuing a path of urban regeneration and sustainable development, with the intention of developing it also in terms of tourism. The project is based on an idea of the city's former mayor, Vittorio Sgarbi, which was taken up and developed by the administration led by the current mayor, Domenico Venuti: an organic path of events and initiatives in recent years has seen the historic centre of Salemi as a protagonist, which is now proposed to the world with the 1 euro house initiative".

There are 36 properties up for grabs in Salemi with a 1 euro price tag. The properties can also be purchased to be used for economic activities and accommodation. It is also possible to buy several properties. As is the case in the majority of 'Case a 1 euro' projects, whoever wants to become the owner of one of these properties has to pay for its renovation, which must be completed within 3 years.

The application for the acquisition of the properties must be received in a sealed and countersigned envelope, by hand or by registered mail of the postal service, using the application form no later than 31st August 2021. The application must contain, in addition to the documentation provided for in the official notice, a commitment to comply with all the obligations set out in Article 11 of the Regulations, as well as an indication of any additional work planned to enrich the historical context of the site.
