Time is now running out if you want to be in with a chance of buying a 1 euro house in Castiglione, as applications close on 27th March 2022. We have the details. 

Castiglione di Sicilia is the main town and historic village of a territory that includes six inhabited areas and extends as far as Etnea and the Alcantera gorges. The village is made up of a charming cluster of houses perched one on top of the other, full of monuments, intertwining narrow streets, squares with noble palaces and a Byzantine dome declared a monument of national interest.

This first phase of the sale of 1 euro house scheme in Castiglione includes the possibility to buy the first 2 properties available. However, in the coming months, further properties in the town will be up for sale for 1 euro with plenty of opportunities to get your hands on a cheap home in the historic centre of the village.

The procedure to apply for this first set of 1 euro houses in Castiglione di Sicilia is as follows. To participate, you must do so before 13:00 on 27th March 2022. For any further information or clarification, the Municipality has prepared a guide on their website (in Italian), as well as an email address and a call centre. Expressions of interest must be submitted by post or email. Whoever is successful and buys one of these 1 euro houses in Italy must:

  • Enter into a public deed to purchase the property within two months from the date of the determination of approval of the deed of assignment;
  • Pay all the expenses for the drawing up of the deeds (notary, registration, transfer, etc.);
  • Prepare a project for the renovation of the property, acquiring all the necessary quotes, within 6 months from the date of purchase;
  • Start the work within 12 months from the date of issue of the building permit and complete it within 2 years;
  • Enter into a guarantee policy, in favour of the Municipality of Castropignano, for the amount of 4,000 euros, valid for 4 years and 6 months, to guarantee the actual completion of the works. In the event of default by the assignee, the Municipality will have the right to forfeit the policy or to acquire ownership of the property.
