The list of small Italian municipalities choosing to put €1 houses up for sale now includes Piazza Armerina, a small town in the province of Enna that is home to UNESCO sites.
In an effort to counter depopulation and revitalise the social fabric, the town has begun the process of selling properties in its Baroque and Norman historic centre at the symbolic price of one euro. It's one of many 1-euro house schemes in Sicily.

Piazza Armerina is continuing the €1 houses initiative, whose main objective is to boost tourism in the town through the redevelopment of the historic centre, as well as to secure and restore the many abandoned and dilapidated buildings scattered throughout the urban area of the city of mosaics.

“At the time of the launch,” the municipal administration explained, “each citizen will have the opportunity to transfer ownership of a property for which they cannot guarantee safety works, and anyone in the world will be able to purchase it at the symbolic price of one euro. It will become easier to invest in our town, and in this way we will be able to repopulate the historic centre.”
With the aim of encouraging local economic development, supporting the construction sector, and helping young professionals, the councillor has expressed readiness to open discussions with the local orders of architects and engineers to create a collection of “€1 projects” for the properties made available.
The scheme is not limited to attracting new permanent residents. Buyers interested in second homes and holiday homes will also be considered. Those looking to renovate dilapidated properties for tourism purposes are likewise not excluded.
