Italy is the best country in the world to travel to and also has the best hotels. This is according to the British newspaper, The Times, which for the sixth consecutive year has awarded Italy The Times Awards as the best destination for summer holidays.
Italy won Best Destination Country and Best Hotel (with the Hotel Feltrinelli sul Garda taking the crown) thanks to the votes of 500 thousand readers of The Times and The Sunday Times, demanding travellers with good budgets. Procida in Italy is also among the best emerging locations of the year.
The winners of this year’s awards, sponsored by the Italy National Tourist Board, were announced at an exclusive travel industry event in the Italian city of Matera at the end of June, a city that has also recently been awarded for being the most welcoming city on earth.

- Best hotel: Grand Hotel a Villa Feltrinelli (Italy), runners up: Gleneagles Hotel and The Newt
- Best airline: British Airways, runners up: Emirates and Singapore Airlines
- Best ocean cruise operator: Royal Caribbean, runners up: Cunard and P&O Cruises
- Best river cruise operator: Viking River Cruises, runners up: Riviera Travel and Tui
- Best luxury tour operator: Kuoni, runners up: Audley Travel and Abercrombie & Kent
- Best escorted tour operator: Riviera Travel, runners up: Great Rail Journeys and Exodus Travels
- Best ski operator: Crystal, runners up: Inghams and Mark Warner
- Best tour operator: Trailfinders, runners up: Tui and Virgin Holidays
- Best emerging destination: Costa Rica, runners up: Slovenia and Procida
- The eco award: Scotland, runners up: Visit Copenhagen and Responsible Travel
