There’s a special buzz in the air when June arrives in Rome, as rainbow flags start to dot the city’s ancient streets and piazzas. Pride season here feels both celebratory and deeply connected to the city’s ever-evolving social fabric. During Rome Pride 2025, you’ll notice colourful banners draped from neighbourhood balconies, LGBTQ+ venues gearing up for their busiest nights, and an overall sense of optimism and inclusion.

What is Rome Pride?

The tradition dates back to the early 1990s, with Rome hosting its first official Pride in 1994 after years of grassroots activism. Since then, it’s evolved into a highly anticipated annual event, regularly attracting tens of thousands, and even made global headlines when Rome hosted World Pride in 2000.

Rome Pride is organised by a coalition of LGBTQ+ grassroots groups, transfeminist collectives, and advocacy networks deeply rooted in the city. Their collaborative approach keeps the event independent and inclusive, while drawing support from local businesses, national campaigns, and international partners.

The 2025 edition will revolve around the theme of fuorilegge, or OUTLAW, continuing the focus on amplifying diverse voices and demanding equal rights in the face of social and legislative.

The route is classic Rome: you’ll join thousands gathering at Piazza della Repubblica, just a stone’s throw from Termini station, so it’s easy to reach by metro, bus or on foot. From there, the parade snakes down Via Cavour, hugs the edge of the Monti district, and glides along the Via dei Fori Imperiali with jaw-dropping views of the Colosseum. The procession wraps up around Porta Capena Square and the Baths of Caracalla area, where the crowd comes together for music, speeches and celebration.

LGBTQ+ life in Rome

The city’s social attitude has shifted dramatically in recent years—thanks to grassroots activism, visible queer spaces, and a new generation more at ease with diversity. Of course, like many big cities, attitudes can differ between the lively centre and more conservative pockets, but support networks and allies are easy to find.

When looking for somewhere to live or stay longer term in Rome, several neighbourhoods stand out for their welcoming atmosphere and lively LGBTQ+ scene. The historic streets around Via di San Giovanni in Laterano form the beating heart of queer nightlife, packed with bars, cafés, and rainbow flags. Pigneto and Testaccio are both loved for their creative, alternative energy—expect plenty of mixed venues, art spaces, and easygoing locals.

If you’re flat-hunting, you can even use the LGBTQ+ filter when searching for rooms to rent in Rome on platforms like idealista, helping you find queer-friendly shared flats and homes.
