FAI Autumn Days: hidden Italy unlocked
FAI Autumn Days, or Giornate FAI d’Autunno, return on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October 2026. More than 700 selected sites across 350 Italian towns will take part, putting the spotlight on places that are not normally open to visitors.
Think private courtyards, historic houses, former industrial buildings, gardens, churches and lesser-visited corners of familiar cities. It has a similar feel to a National Trust open weekend, though the programme reaches right across Italy and often includes unexpected local places.

Cantine Aperte in Vendemmia: harvest season at Italian wineries
Cantine Aperte in Vendemmia runs from 24 August to 25 October 2026, with participating wineries from the Movimento Turismo del Vino opening their doors during the busiest and most atmospheric stretch of the winemaking calendar.
This is more than a standard tasting session. Depending on the winery and region, the programme can include cellar visits, vineyard walks, explanations of the production process, music, performances and cultural activities linked to the harvest.

Chestnuts, porcini and local autumn sagre
October is prime time for Italy’s smaller food festivals, or sagre. These community-run events are usually built around one local ingredient or dish, with long tables, local wine and a more homespun atmosphere than a glossy food festival.
Chestnuts are the classic autumn ingredient, particularly in parts of Tuscany, Liguria, Piedmont, Campania and Calabria. Look out for roasted chestnuts, castagnaccio cake, chestnut flour and necci, Tuscan chestnut-flour pancakes often served with soft cheese. Porcini mushrooms, new olive oil, seasonal wine and regional cheeses frequently turn up on the same menus.

The International Alba White Truffle Fair runs from 10 October to 6 December 2026 in Alba, Piedmont. It is one of Italy’s heavyweight gastronomy events, centred on Tuber magnatum Pico, the prized Alba white truffle.
The Alba White Truffle World Market is the fair’s historic core, with inspected truffles, local producers and plenty of opportunities to get to grips with the region’s serious food and wine culture. The wider programme includes tastings, workshops, cookery events, folklore and Alba’s traditional donkey palio.

The opening film is Il rumore delle cose nuove by Paolo Genovese. Javier Bardem will receive the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award, giving the 2026 line-up a particularly strong international draw.

Lucca Comics & Games: pop culture inside Tuscany’s city walls
Lucca Comics & Games runs from 28 October to 1 November 2026. For five days, the medieval streets, squares and ramparts of Lucca fill with comics, games, cosplay, exhibitions, publishers, concerts and late-night events.
The 2026 edition is set to put particular energy into music, with cult theme tunes, rock, electronic music and bass-heavy late-night sets spilling into the city’s public spaces.

National Urban Trekking Day: city walks with a lighter footprint
Italy’s National Urban Trekking Day, or Giornata Nazionale del Trekking Urbano, falls on Saturday 31 October 2026. Participating towns and cities create themed walking routes focused on urban history, art, architecture and landscapes, while drawing attention to sustainable and accessible tourism.
Routes often use lanes, stairways, parks and lesser-known neighbourhoods that would not appear on a standard sightseeing circuit. Some cities run twilight walks around Halloween, while others keep things gentler and family-friendly.

The Selva del Lamone Nature Reserve is among the locations associated with science outreach activities. Separately, Lucca will host the fifth edition of its wider interdisciplinary event, titled Forms of Intelligence, from 8 to 11 October 2026.

Family at the Museum Day: culture without the shushing
Family at the Museum Day falls on Sunday 11 October 2026. Museums around Italy will run activities for preschool and school-age children, such as workshops, creative activities and family-focused visits.
It is a useful counterweight to the usual museum routine, particularly if the thought of a long, silent gallery circuit with younger children feels slightly optimistic. Participating museums set their own programmes and booking rules.
