More and more Italian municipalities are deciding to put their houses up for sale for just 1 euro. Properties for sale in Italy for this symbolic price tend to attract great interest both in Italy and abroad. In most cases, the aim of selling properties for 1 euro is to repopulate the territory, but in the case of Oyace, a charming village in the Aosta Valley, the purpose is different. To find out more, idealista/news interviewed the mayor, Stefania Clos.

The initiative of the municipality of Aosta was launched as the solution to a problem (the problem being the state of abandonment in which several properties in Oyace are found) and, at the same time, to offer a solution to the owners themselves. The mayor Stefania Clos explained: "In our area, there is a lot of abandoned property, most often due to the fact that inheritances are being kept but at the same time, the owners who have inherited the property have no interest in living there".

Going into detail, the mayor of Oyace also points out that "in many cases these properties are located in the historic centre and, in addition to the aesthetic aspect, there is also the risk that they may become unsafe. An abandoned property in many cases is not safe and the owners almost always see it as a burden and a waste of money, which is why they do not intervene to renovate the property or make it safe". As a result, the mayor wants to help these property owners.

Even before becoming mayor, Stefania Clos has always put the spotlight on this issue, so much so that once she was elected she wasted no time in offering the owners of the properties in question a solution: "The municipality can take charge of starting the work to make these properties safe," the mayor explained. This however was a problem for the property owners as they would have to pay for the renovation work.

Therefore, in the end, the best solution was deemed to be putting these properties on the market for 1 euro. In this way, the owners can "get rid" of properties in which they have no interest, buyers can invest their resources exclusively in renovation work and the municipality will return to having a historic centre that is safer and more aesthetically pleasing.

To get off the ground, the project needs a response from homeowners. "The project was launched at the beginning of February, but I am already satisfied with the response: several people have agreed to sell to buyers who want to renovate the properties".

Oyace has just 212 inhabitants, is located in the Bionaz valley, and is a mountain village with everything you need. The village centre is quite lively, with a church, town hall, grocery store, bar, post office and doctor's, as well as a nursery and primary school and a well-stocked library with over 12,000 volumes. In addition to the cultural and social offer, a football pitch and a multipurpose facility complete the recreational aspect of this charming Italian village.
