House prices in Italy in 2020 vs 2021

In spite of the coronavirus pandemic, which has affected property prices in many European countries, Italy has resisted and in most cases in 2020, Italy saw rising house prices across the country.

On the whole, between July 2020 and July 2021, house prices in Italy have dropped by 1.2%. However, this doesn't tell the whole story, as property prices in Italy in 2021 so far represent a game of 2 halves. The most significant price rises in July 2021 compared to the same month in 2020 have been observed in the regions of Aosta Valley (8.2%) and Veneto (2,1%). On the other hand, looking at the same period, Italian house prices have dropped by more than 4% in Marche, Campania, Basilicata, Lazio and Abruzzo.

The cheapest place to buy property in Italy in 2021 is in the region of Calabria. Here, owners are selling their property for an average of 890 euros/m2, while prices in Calabria have dropped 1.9% compared to 2020. The next cheapest place to buy in Italy in Molise (906 euros/m2), followed by Sicily which is the first region with average property prices above 1000 euros/m2 (1,030 euros/m2).  

At the other end of the ranking, the most expensive houses for sale in Italy are found in Lazio, Tuscany, Liguria, Trentino-Alto Adige and Aosta Valley, where average prices all surpass 2,000 euros/m2.
