Italy continues to undergo changes with its new government and proposed amendments to the country's Budget Law, where the details of Italy's 2023 pet bonus has been announced. Let's find out what it is, how much the allowance would amount to, and the requirements for accessing it.

How does Italy's pet bonus 2023 work?

An amendment signed by Michela Vittoria Brambilla proposed the inclusion of a pet bonus in Italy's new Budget Law. This would be an allowance of 150 euros per year for each pet that lives in a household and is registered in the pet register (up to a maximum of three).

Thus, the maximum amount payable under the pet bonus 2023 would be 450 euros, which would be paid by Inps upon application by the pet's owner. To apply, however, one must have an Isee of no more than 15,000 euros, while for those who do not exceed 7,000 euro the value of the bonus doubles, potentially up to 900 euros per year (for a maximum of 3 animals).

How do you get the pet bonus in Italy?

Details of Italy's 2023 pet bonus are yet to be confirmed. However, there is currently another type of pet bonus, valid for 2022, which consists of a tax allowance in the income tax return with an Irpef income tax deduction of 19% for veterinary and pharmaceutical expenses relating to dogs and cats legally kept or used in sporting activities.

To obtain it, no online application is required. It is sufficient to fill in the tax return, specifying the wish to obtain the deduction. For dogs, registration with the dog registry office and presentation of the microchip document are required. For cats, on the other hand, microchip documents or the purchase invoice must be presented.

To obtain this pet bonus, it is necessary to be able to prove the traceability of the expenses incurred for the medical treatment of dogs and cats, i.e. only for purchases made by credit card, debit card, debit card, bank transfer or postal payment. Eligible expenses refer to:

  • medical examinations and veterinary treatment
  • medicines prescribed by a specialist
  • laboratory analyses
  • surgical interventions.
