For many, August is the month for holidays by the sea, in the mountains or in the city. However, the hottest month of summer also offers plenty of high-profile events taking place from North to South. From the rhythms of the tarantella to medieval traditions, including palios and reenactments.

So, here’s what to do in August 2025 in Italy and which events you won’t want to miss.

La Notte della Taranta

One of the most famous late-summer events is undoubtedly La Notte della Taranta. This festival, born in the heart of Salento, traditionally takes place between mid and late August, culminating in a magical night that draws thousands of spectators every year from across Italy and abroad. The grand final concert is held in Melpignano, in the province of Lecce, and this year it will take place on 23 August.

The music director will be clarinettist David Krakauer, accompanied by pianist Riccardo Zangirolami. While the full line-up, including guest artists, is yet to be announced, this year’s theme is “Generazione Taranta,” revisiting some of the most popular songs from past editions.

Palio dell’Assunta in Siena

This historic event takes place every year on 16 August in the atmospheric Piazza del Campo in Siena, and it is the second major horse race following the Palio di Provenzano held in early July.

The contrade (districts) competing this year will be Pantera, Tartuca, Drago, Bruco, Giraffa, Aquila, Leocorno, Onda, Civetta, and Valdimontone. To watch the Palio, you can either stand in the centre of the square or book a seat in one of the grandstands.

Ferrara Buskers Festival

Since 1988, the end of summer in Ferrara has been the meeting point for the world’s best street musicians. From 27 to 31 August, the city will welcome 250 artists from 19 different countries. Every evening, there will also be opportunities to attend talks, readings, and exhibitions.

From 27 to 30 August, workshops and talks are scheduled during the day, with performances taking place each evening. On 31 August, the festival will conclude with a final band show dedicated this year to Lucio Dalla and Jimmy Villotti.

Vara di Messina

Among the most evocative traditions held in August is certainly the Vara di Messina. This event takes place every year on 15 August, in celebration of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, and is one of the most deeply felt moments for the people of Messina.

The Vara di Messina is a remarkable religious procession featuring a towering votive structure over 14 metres high and weighing several tonnes. This richly decorated monument, topped with a statue of the Assumed Virgin Mary, is carried by hand by hundreds of devotees through the main streets of Messina’s historic centre.

Cavalcata dell’Assunta in Fermo

The Cavalcata dell’Assunta is considered one of the oldest historical reenactments in Italy. It takes place in Fermo, nestled between the hills of the Marche region, and unfolds over several days of celebrations culminating in a spectacular costume parade and horse race.

The 2025 Cavalcata dell’Assunta programme begins as early as May, featuring archery competitions, award ceremonies, and performances by flag-wavers and drummers. The August evenings are marked by costume ceremonies, leading up to the historic procession and the drawing of the race heats on 14 August. On Ferragosto (15 August), as the sun sets, the thrilling Palio race takes place.

UEFA Super Cup in Udine

Ahead of the Serie A season’s return, the UEFA Super Cup in Udine is one of the most eagerly anticipated and spectacular sporting events of the summer. The match will take place on Wednesday, 13 August 2025 at the Dacia Arena, home to Udinese Calcio, bringing a high-profile clash to Friuli between the winners of last season’s Champions League and Europa League.

This year, Paris Saint-Germain will face Tottenham Hotspur. But it’s not just about the game itself. In the days leading up to the match, Udine will host a variety of football-themed events, including the opening of a fan festival and the chance to get up close to the trophy.

Venice Film Festival

The end of August also marks the return of the Venice Film Festival, one of the most highly anticipated events worldwide. Directors, actors, producers and film stars gather at the Lido di Venezia.

The official programme includes several sections: from the main competition for the Golden Lion, to out-of-competition screenings, the Venice Days (Giornate degli Autori), and the selections of the International Critics’ Week. Although the full programme has yet to be announced, it is confirmed that the festival will open with Paolo Sorrentino’s film La Grazia.
