An Italian beach has introduced a strict umbrella ban for most adults and capped access at just 150 people at a time. There’s also a €10 entry fee and compulsory booking. The reasoning sits firmly in environmental protection.
This Italian beach now bans umbrellas and caps visitors
The beach in question is Punta Molentis, in Villasimius on Sardinia’s south-east coast. It sits within a designated conservation area and forms part of the Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area.
According to the BBC, local authorities say the ecosystem is “one of the most valuable in our territory but also one of the most fragile” and that limiting human impact is necessary to protect it for future generations.
Why Punta Molentis has introduced strict 2026 beach rules
The tighter restrictions stem from a series of environmental events.
- In July 2025, a devastating wildfire burned more than 100 hectares of Mediterranean scrub behind the beach.
- The situation worsened in 2026 when violent storms in January and February accelerated erosion and reduced the amount of usable sand.
Local inspections concluded that the human presence needed to be drastically reduced to prevent further damage.
Visitor limits in 2026
The new access rules are in force from 6 June to 31 October 2026. They include:
- A cap of 150 visitors at a time by land
- Parking limited to 70 cars per day
- Opening hours of 08:00 to 20:30, with visitors required to leave by 21:00
- Arrivals by sea restricted to 100 people at a time
Together, these measures make Punta Molentis a tightly regulated beach for the 2026 summer season.
The umbrella ban in Sardinia
Umbrellas are banned for visitors aged 10 to 65. Shade structures such as gazebos and tents are also prohibited.
Only one umbrella per eligible group is permitted, and it must be installed by lifeguard staff using a special drill designed to avoid damaging the dunes.
Entry fees and parking costs at Punta Molentis
Access now comes with fixed charges:
- €10 per person for those arriving by land
- €5 per person for those arriving by boat
- Around €10 for cars
- Around €15 for camper vans
Booking is mandatory
Reservations are compulsory and managed by Villasimius Srl through its online platform. Entry is not permitted without a confirmed booking.
Arriving by boat
Landing is permitted only via authorised operators within the Marine Protected Area. Visitors arriving by sea:
- May stay for no more than one hour
- Are not allowed to bring backpacks or cool bags ashore
