To answer this question, idealista/data has drawn up a report to rank Italian towns and cities generating the most leads (email contacts and shares) per listing and those where average monthly rents are highest. Let's find out what the scenario is based on the data for the first quarter of 2022.

The most expensive cities to rent in Italy 2022

The podium of the most expensive locations in Italy for those looking for a house to rent in the first quarter of 2022 is made up of towns and cities near the coast. The first place is occupied by Pietrasanta in Versilia, a stone's throw from Forte dei Marmi, where the average monthly rent is 3,000 euros. This is followed by two towns in Romagna: Cervia (2,971 euros per month) and Riccione (2,854 euros).

Just off the podium of the most expensive places in Italy to rent a house is another municipality in the province of Lucca, Camaiore, where average monthly rent is 1,436 euros. The first major city we encounter in the top 10 is Milan, where on average it takes 1,350 to rent a house in the city.

In the top 10, you can also find other important Italian cities such as Florence (1,141 euros/month) and Venice (1,128 euros/month). Completing the list of the top ten are places such as Rosignano Marittimo (1,172 euros/month); Desenzano del Garda (1,113 euros/month) and Olbia 1,063 euros/month).

Below the 1,000 euros per month mark are Bologna (943 euros/month), Rome (866 euros/month), Naples (802 euros/month), Verona (753 euros/month), Bari (712 euros/month), Palermo (636 euros/month), Genoa (520 euros/month) and Turin (459 euros/month).

The most popular locations to rent a house in Italy

idealista has compiled an indicator that summarises the pressure of demand on supply in each area of Italy for the rental sector. The indicator is based on the number of leads (email contacts and shares) received per listing. Locations with more than 95 rental listings were taken into account.

According to the relative demand index compiled by idealista/data, the greatest demand for houses for rent in the first quarter of 2022 was concentrated in Cinisello Balsamo (in the province of Milan), which totals an average of 39 contacts per listing. Second place in the ranking is occupied by Rimini (31.3) and another municipality in the province of Milan completes the podium: Sesto San Giovanni (31.2 contacts per listing).

Legnano (31.1 contacts per listing), Bologna (26.8), Monza (26.7), Pavia (26.1), Modena (24.4), Padua (24.1) and Prato (23.2) complete the top 10 most popular municipalities for those looking for a house to rent in Italy. In Milan, on average, a listing for a house for rent receives 11.1 contacts. In Rome, on the other hand, it is 5.9.
