Italy's 1 euro home initiative has also arrived in Augusta, Sicily. Along with Sambuca, which recently launched 2 euro houses, Troina and Delia, more and more municipalities in Sicily are deciding to put properties up for sale at a symbolic price in order to repopulate and give new life to their historical centres. Another town in Sicily, Augusta, has now announced its plans to sell 1 euro houses. We have the details.

As far as Augusta in particular is concerned, the 1 euro home scheme is aimed at recovering the housing function and the revitalisation of the historic centre of the town. The council has announced that it plans to do this "through the redevelopment of the urban-building network in the town that favours the housing settlement of families, tourist-receptive activities, shops or craft or social workshops".

The council has also emphasised its desire to restore, enhance and secure privately-owned properties located in the historic centre "guaranteeing their hygienic-sanitary situation", as well as helping the local economy "by employing local firms and workers in the renovation process". All of this will contribute to the socio-economic growth of the town and ultimately "extend the range of housing and tourist accommodation in the town to attract non-residents".

But how does the 1 euro house initiative work in Augusta? According to what has been explained, the owner/seller of a property in a state of structural deterioration or someone who just simply wants rid of their property must declare their willingness to sell the property at the symbolic price of 1 euro, giving written notice to the municipality. Then, those who are interested in purchasing and renovating the property must notify the council using the appropriate forms. All the necessary forms can be found on the website of the Municipality of Augusta on the page dedicated to the initiative "case a 1 euro".
