For visitors planning an August holiday in Italy on a budget, certain areas offer a rewarding mix of beaches, nature, local food and cultural sights. Staying slightly inland, travelling without a car where practical and booking well ahead can make a considerable difference to accommodation costs.
Where to go in Italy in August on a budget
Gargano, Puglia
The Gargano peninsula sits in northern Puglia, projecting into the Adriatic Sea and forming part of Gargano National Park. It is an appealing option for travellers seeking clear water and dramatic coastal scenery without the price tag often associated with more fashionable parts of southern Italy.
The coastal towns of Vieste, Peschici and Mattinata are the main bases for a beach holiday. Around them, limestone cliffs, sea stacks and small coves create a more rugged landscape than the long, flat beaches elsewhere in Puglia.

August coincides with Ferragosto, the Italian public holiday on 15 August, and many Italians take their annual break during the middle two weeks of the month. Beaches, roads and accommodation are therefore at their busiest, especially between roughly 10 and 20 August.
A lower-cost trip is more likely when accommodation is reserved several months ahead, with arrival and departure dates outside the Ferragosto period where possible. Campsites, agriturismi and apartments with kitchen facilities can help keep daily spending under control, while staying a short distance from major resorts often brings better value than a seafront address.
