Italy has long been considered a dream destination for foodies, but the latest data suggests that reputation is more than romantic nostalgia. Six Italian cities feature in Europe’s Top 20 Foodie Ranking in 2026, more than any other country.
Food travel is booming in 2026
Food has shifted from being a pleasant addition to becoming a central reason for travel. According to TUI Musement, over 56% of travellers say they are interested or very interested in culinary activities during their holidays.
That appetite for authentic experiences comes as Italian cuisine becomes the first to receive UNESCO recognition, reinforcing its global culinary reputation.
The Foodie Ranking 2026 compiled by TUI Musement is based on Google search volume data for food tours. It measures where travellers are actively planning to eat, learn and taste.
Rome tops the Foodie Ranking 2026
With 80,600 searches, Rome ranks first in Europe for food tours. Roman cuisine is deeply tied to neighbourhood identity, market culture and generational recipes.
Rome’s food tours often revolve around:
- Campo de’ Fiori market tastings
- Visits to Mercato Trionfale
- Walking tours through Trastevere
- Hands-on pasta-making classes featuring classic pasta types like fresh fettuccine
- Limoncello tastings
The city also has plenty of non-touristy things to do once you've sated your appetite for pizza and pasta.
Bologna secures 2nd place as Italy’s pasta capital
With 60,100 searches, Bologna ranks second in Europe. This is hardly surprising as the city is often referred to as La Grassa (the fat one), a nickname that acknowledges its rich culinary heritage.
The city is synonymous with must-try pasta dishes, including tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini in brodo, and traditional lasagne. Plus, mortadella, regional wines from Emilia-Romagna, and irresistible gelato.
Markets and small trattorias still serve recipes that haven’t been diluted for international tastes. If someone wants to understand what “alla bolognese” truly means, this is where it becomes clear.
Naples in the top 10 – pizza, street food and culinary identity
Naples ranks 10th, with nearly 25,000 searches, reinforcing Italy’s strength in the Top 10. Food is tied directly to identity and community.
The art of Neapolitan pizza‑making being recognised as a UNESCO-protected tradition underlines how deeply culinary tradition runs in the city. Plus, street food culture thrives in neighbourhoods in Naples, where locals still gather in small groups outside takeaway counters.
Popular culinary experiences include:
- Traditional pizza-making classes
- Tasting cuoppo fritto (paper cones filled with fried seafood or vegetables)
- Sampling sfogliatella pastries
- Trying rum-soaked babà
Venice, Florence and Milan strengthen Italy’s lead
Italy’s dominance extends beyond the Top 10, where each city adds a different layer to Italy’s gastronomic identity.:
Venice – 11th (22,280 searches)
Venice brings lagoon cuisine and seafood traditions shaped by trade routes.
Florence – 14th (17,370 searches)
Florence showcases Tuscan simplicity, with olive oil, grilled meats and rustic breads.
Milan – 17th (14,440 searches)
Milan blends regional Lombard dishes with a more contemporary dining scene.
Why Italy remains Europe’s dream destination for culinary experiences
Italy’s success in the Foodie Ranking 2026 is not built on a single city or trend. It rests on regional diversity and strong local identities. Across the country, food tours typically include:
- Market visits focused on seasonal produce
- Cooking classes centred on regional specialities
- Tastings linked to neighbourhood history
- Local food festivals known as sagre
- Experiences shaped around community and family tradition
There is also growing interest in sustainable practices and local sourcing, particularly in cities where small producers remain central to supply chains.
